With over 8,000 delegates, Sibos 2017 Toronto is officially the largest to date in the Americas. Delegates were also joined by the world’s financial media at the MTCC, with over 140 journalists in attendance.
Highlights included the opening plenary address, given by Dave McKay, CEO of RBC, who talked about how data is the new battleground. McKay discussed how API advancements are opening up opportunities, but stressed how trust and security is crucial across all digital touchpoints.

The week’s first Big Issue Debate took a deep dive into cybersecurity and digitisation. Admiral Michelle Howard, a true pioneer, began the session by explaining how the US military has studied, adopted and mastered the use of technology. She was then joined by J.P. Morgan CISO Rohan Amin, and technologist and hacker Pablos Holman, for a debate on employee education, creating a culture of security, and how the industry can best move forward.

The conference begins
Featuring in-depth panel sessions and hundreds of speakers, the 2017 conference agenda is structured around four streams which will run throughout the week.
The Banking stream covers the future of payments and the challenges facing correspondent banking. The Compliance stream looks at developments in financial crime compliance and how banks are responding.
The Securities stream examines how regulatory changes are shaping market infrastructures, and how the market players are responding. The Technology stream considers the impact that breakthrough technologies are having on financial services, and how they can deliver value to customers as well as address the challenges of cybersecurity.
Big ideas always start somewhere…
The Innotribe programme kicked off today in a specially-designed coffee shop by the exhibition floor.
The chosen environment recognises the fact that 90% of FinTechs are formed in a coffee shop. It is also a nod to history – coffee shops were the birthplace of the Enlightenment in 17th century Europe.
Take a look at Innotribe’s magazine, which previews the week’s sessions and speakers.
A world-class exhibition
This year’s exhibition, which opened today, features around 200 financial institutions, application and middleware vendors, systems integrators, consultants, central clearing systems, and FinTechs.
With all the biggest names, all in one place, the Sibos exhibition, housed in the Connect Zone (Level 800 in the South Building), provides delegates with unparalleled business opportunities and access. Delegates can view the full exhibitor list on Sibos.com.
Looking ahead
On Tuesday morning, we welcome Sir Tim Berners-Lee, who will be speaking at one of the Innotribe Sense Maker sessions, a new session format that mixes inspiring content with networking.
Sir Berners-Lee needs little introduction. A graduate of Oxford University, he invented the World Wide Web while at CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory, in 1989. His specifications of URIs, HTTP and HTML were refined as Web technology spread.
There will also be a Big Issue Debate on the growing impact of nation first politics on our industry, which will be moderated by The Economist’s Anne McElvoy.
Beat the cyber threat!
There will be two interactive workshops, taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday, based on the Kaspersky Infrastructure Protection Simulation (KIPS) role-playing game, which will focus on the role cybersecurity plays in ensuring business continuity and profitability.
These workshops are open to all delegates, and will provide a specific benefit to senior business and IT managers, and those working in cybersecurity functions.
Sibos Comedy Club
The Sibos Comedy Club is a new networking initiative. On Tuesday evening, it will showcase a diverse line-up of comedians from Toronto and beyond.
There will be pre-show networking, drinks and snacks at 17:30, before the entertainment begins at 18:00. The Sibos Comedy Club will take place at the MTCC in Conference Room 1.
For more details and to register, visit Sibos.com.
In the spirit of giving back to the local community, the Sibos Comedy Club will support SKETCH, the charity partner for Sibos 2017.
